Free Dessie O'Hare Campaign Protest Outside Portlaoise
17 July 2001

A protest was held outside Portlaoise Gaol, calling for the immediate release of Dessie O'Hare. The protest was well attended by IRSP members from Dublin and also by the Garda and special branch, who made their attendance highly visible.

The protestors ad a megaphone, which was used to voice their opinion on not only the release of Dessie O'Hare, but the political status of all republican prisoners. For a bit of humour, they also called on the Irish Army to lay down their weapons, mount a protest and join their picket.

Prisoners showed their support by hanging out banners and starry plough flags from their windows.

After the prostest members of the Dublin IRSP visited the prisoners and reported back that morale is high and prisoners find themseleves in good spirits.

Dublin IRSP comrades called upon other republicans and progressives to lend their support and be seen showing their support.

Protests are expected to escalate to compel the Department of Justice and the Irish Government in general to honour their commitment and release Dessie under the terms of the Good Friday Agreement.
