IRSP Hold Public Meeting on Abortion
6 March 1990

Since the beginning of 1990, there has been a noticable resurgence of reactionary assault upon the fundamental rights of women. Fresh from their maintenance of the status quo in the 26 counties coupled with their continuous attempts at stifling the publication of information on referral clinics, SPUC have now set about widening their campaign into the 6 counties. Already we have witnessed the alliance of SPUC, the Tories, Unionists, SDLP and the churches. Proving that when the religious and political values of reactionaries are threatened, in this instance by women demanding the control of their own bodies, then a united orange/green front is immediate.

In face of this "wave of reaction" what has been the response of socialists and republicans? To date, silence and ambiguity from the republican camp has been met with inactivity and an equally deafening silence from the socialists.

This Thursday, March 8th, is Internation Women's Day. It is apt therefore that the IRSP have organised a public meeting under the title "Do women have the right to choose?" - abortion... the hidden question for republicans.

This is intended to bring the debate to the heart of working class West Belfast, an area in which women have borne the brunt of social, economic and political oppression.

Venue for Public Meeting - Conway Mill, Thursday March 8th at 8pm.
