Crumlin Road Gaol: "Segregate now before death" - IRSP
14 March 1990

In the wake of today's "mini-riot", the IRSP have reiterated their call for the segregation of loyalist and republican prisoners in Crumlin Road gaol.

Anna Hughes of the IRSP prison welfare department said: "The segregation of republican and loyalist remand prisoners has been called for by both sides over many years. The fact is that political remand prisoners are already recognised as such, with both groups having alternate use of facilities at different times. However, 23 hour per day lock-up as a result of this can only serve to heighten an already tense situation.

"The NIO have a responsibility to act in recognition of the fact that political segregation already exists in other gaols run under their regime. Therefore they must immediately alleviate the situation by providing loyalist and republican prisoners with seperate wing accomdation before someone is killed as a result of their bumbling dishonesty."
