Conditions in Crumlin Road Jail Worsen - IRSP
21 September 1990

The IRSP re-iterates its call for segregation in Crumlin Road Jail in light of the worsening conditions there. Anna Hughes, speaking on behalf of the POW department, stated that "the conditions these prisoners awaiting trial are forced to live in are totally appalling."

"Since the start of this week there has been a policy of restricted movement within A-Wing. This entails much few prisoners being allowed out of their cells at one time for such necessary things as slopping out and washing."

"One prisoner visited yesterday had not been permitted out to wash for two days. Another had been unable to slop out his cell for over forty-eight hours."

"Such living conditions are totally intolerable. These prisoners are being forced to eat many of their meals in these cells, which reek of urine. An animal should not be forced to live in conditions such as these."

"This situation exists not for security reasons, but as a result of the NIO's refusal to implement segregation. The IRSP demands an end to forced integration and a return to safe and hygenic living conditions for these prisoners."
