IRSP Statement on the Conditional Ceasefire of the Loyalist Death Squads - October 1994

"The IRSP, in reaction to the announcement of a conditional ceasefire by loyalist death squads, said it is to be welcomed that nationalists are no longer to be persecuted and murdered by the British-inspired death squads."

"But it is obvious to us, that for them to come to that decision, they have, in their own words, been given guarantees in relation to the status of the six county state being part of the United Kingdom."

"As a republican socialist party, we cannot agree with the political process which has led to this position. We have rejected the Downing Street Declaration as a means of sorting out Ireland's future."

"The British do have a part to play in this situation. They are the ones who set up this artificial state. They must now dismantle it, withdraw the unionist veto, disarm, and stand down the sectarian RUC, and withdraw their army from our country."

"Then all Irish people, Protestant and Catholic, can sit down to discuss their future. There must be national self-determination for the Irish people as a whole."

"Unfortunately, the whole emphasis of the present so-called peace process is to bring about British-unionist victory."

"We ask, how can this be a genuine process which can bring about just and lasting settlement?"

It is well known that the INLA has carried out no military actions since their attacks on members of loyalist death squads last July -- this does not require one to be privy to internal INLA documents to ascertain. The INLA has ceased hostilities on many occasions over the years out of tactical considerations. This should not be construed to represent a ceasefire in the sense of a permanent denial of the right of the INLA to resume this tactic as is deemed appropriate, however, and this point needs to be stressed in light of the media's attempt to portray the INLA as having opted to disarm.
