The following statement is from IRSP Ard Comhairle spokesperson Ciaran McLaughlin
"From Derry through Belfast to Armagh, the IRSP report a steady increase in British Army activity. From 8:10 pm on Friday, February 9th, military vehiles carrying troops and stores were observed entering British army garrisons across west Belfast. This is a scene that has been repeated across the North. Indications are that this re-militarisation was in progress from before the ending of the Provisionals cease-fire. Residents living around the massive new joint RUC/British army base in the upper Springfield area of Belfast -- where work began post cease-fire -- had been told that there were no plans for a helicopter pad in the base. Yet in the week before the cease-fire's end, they were informed that work was to commence on one. The IRSP view this move with concern. If a renewed military presence should be accompanied by an increase in oppressive actions, then the hand of Republican Socialists may be forced in defence of working class areas." |
