IRSP Statement on SF support in General Election
23 March 1997

The following is a statement from Kevin McQuillan speaking on behalf of the Ard Comhairle Irish Republican Socialist Party:

"The Irish Republican Socialist Party wish to see maximum republican unity for the forthcoming General election. Accordingly, we call for all those who wish to register their opposition to British occupation and interference in our country to give their vote to Sinn Fein candidates.

"This decision was not arrived at lightly, given our opposition to Sinn Fein's involvement in the failed 'pacification process'.

"Giving a critical vote for Sinn Fein does not mean that we support the 'pacification process'. Rather, it maximises the republican vote, underscores our opposition and strengthens the chances of unseating a number of bigoted unionists.

"The IRSP also welcome the planned meetings between representatives of Roisin McAliskey, the SDLP and Sinn Fein. Agreement must be reached between those concerned that will put an end to the misrepresentation of the mid-Ulster constituency by the DUPs William McCrea."
