IRSP Ard Comhairle Responds to Questions of IRSP Support of Sinn Fein in the Westminster Elections
12 April 1997

IRSP Ard Comhairle International Secretary Gary Adams contributed this response to a recent inquiry regarding the IRSP having called for six county residents to vote for Sinn Fein in the upcoming Westminister elections:

"I quite understand the mood of some supporters in relation to the IRSM's call for a critical vote for SF. We are all aware of the sustained campaign waged by SF to marginalize our movement. However, from a Marxist analysis the SF/IRA group is involved in a progressive national liberation struggle. On this point and on this point alone we should, as a party committed to the principles of Marxist-Leninism, call for a strong militant-nationalist vote. This critical support does not extend to the local elections, which we see as having no real significance in relation to fighting the Brits on the political front.

In relation to the party running candidates in any election I would suggest that such an initiative would require resources which are better applied, for the moment, to building the party's structures in the local areas. In relation to party building, we here in Dundalk have found that the establishment of the Power-O'Reilly cumann has met with a very positive response from the community and we expect several new members to be proposed at our next meeting.

In comradeship,
Gary Adams
