IRSP on loyalist gun attacks - "Remain vigilant - get angry."
16 July 1997

Statement from IRSP spokesperson Fra Halligan:

"Tonight's attempt at murder in Ardoyne was the work of a Loyalist death squad operating under the directives and control of the C.L.M.C.

"The murder of Bernadette Martin was the work of the LVF, despite their denials.

"This is what Catholics and Nationalists have had to suffer and endure under the rule of Loyalism and Unionism. No amount of conciliatory words or crocodile tears will make this any different. It will only change when Britain withdraws her divisive occupation of this part of our country.

"The IRSP believe that we are seeing the beginning of yet another bout of Loyalist attacks upon our community. We support calls for Nationalists to be vigilant.

"We will not however call upon people to remain calm. We have seen what such calls got us in 1968 and 1995/96/97. 'Dignified peaceful protest' and 'calm responses' are taken by Unionists and Loyalist paramilitaries as a green light to break heads and murder people.

"The IRSP say - get angry, you have every right to. It is by letting Loyalists and their allies in the British Government know that we are angry and are not prepared to take this laying down that will end these attacks."
