IRSP Response to IRA Cease-Fire
20 July 1997

This statement has been issued following a meeting of the I.R.S.P. Ard Comhairle:

"The Leadership of the Irish Republican Socialist Party have considered the implications of the current political process that has culminated with Sunday's announcement of an IRA cease-fire.

The question must be asked - has the past 27 years of repression, imprisonment and death all been aimed at securing seats for nationalists at a revamped Stormont and the copper fastening of partition?

The Irish Republican Socialist Party recognises and applauds the tenacity and bravery of IRA volunteers over the years of repression and resistance. That said, we cannot see the reintroduction of an 'unequivocal' cease-fire linked to the current process as providing any basis for those who wish to attain the republican ideal, the establishment of a sovereign nation based on the politics of Tone, Connolly, Mellows and Sands.

It is our view that the so called "Peace process" is little more than an thinly veiled attempt at pacifying Nationalist demands while neutralising Republican resistance to the British occupation of Ireland. This analysis is shared by a vast majority of grass-roots Republican supporters and activists.

As Republican Socialists we sincerely wish for harmony between the peoples living on these Islands. We yearn for a society free from gun-fire and violence. However, it is not realistic to expect such while Britain continues to occupy part of our country. Therefore, we reject any form of dialogue that is about 'renegotiating the nature of the union' with Britain.

To consider how best to advance Republican Socialist objectives the IRSP has already begun a period of intense discussions with members, supporters and with Republican Socialist prisoners. We reiterate our call for the convening of a Republican Forum to bring all Republicans together to consider the way forward."
