Statement from Terry O' Hearcain IRSP Coordinater (Britain):
"From early this morning Special Branch officers based in London and Hertfordshire visited the homes of a number of members and supporters of the Irish Republican Socialist Party. In a number of instances, our members' family and friends with no political affiliations were visited and quizzed. "The stated aim of this questioning was to assess the views of Republican Socialists resident in Britain as to the IRSP's critical analysis of the current 'pacification' process. Many visited were informed that their attitudes would be reflected by way of a report to the Government. "On a more sinister note, it was made clear that unless the Republican Socialist Movement fell into line with Sinn Fein and declared an unequivocal unilateral cease-fire, that they (the police) would ensure that the opposition would be 'stamped out'. "I have one message and one message alone to give to the Special Branch and British government. Harassment and oppressive raids will not make the IRSP in Britain cease our political activities. If the British Government seriously wish to know of the reasons behind the opposition of the Republican Socialist Movement to the exclusive and pro-unionist 'peace process' - then they should engage directly with the IRSP, not pussy foot around conducting cease-fire surveys and annoying people in their homes." The early morning raids by Special Branch officers in London and Hertfordshire were discovered to have also been coordinated with similar raids in Manchester on homes of members and supporters of the Irish Republican Socialist Party. |
