Statement from IRSP Prisons Spokesperson Willie Gallagher:
The Irish Republican Socialist Party are calling for the immediate transfer of John Kennaway, Sonny Glennon, and Christopher McWilliams from Maghaberry prison back to the Irish National Liberation Army H-Block in Long Kesh. IRSP Prisons Spokesperson Willie Gallagher said, "The British Government are attempting to further punish the three men outside the judicial system. The IRSP have tried unsuccessfully over the last three months to negotiate the men's transfer with the Northern Ireland Office. Within these negotiations, the British Government have acted in bad faith and deliberately led prisoners' representatives to believe that they were considering the men's transfer requests. It is our belief that they never intended to transfer the men. We have informed the prisoners concerned of the breakdown in negotiations." The three men are on a British imposed 23 hour a day lock-up and are held in isolation even from each other. The men are refusing to accept visits as their visiting conditions are of a closed nature, they are separated from their visitors by a glass screen. The NIO have used as a spurious excuse that they are concerned for the men's safety. It is our view that the republican socialist POWs will be safest among their comrades in the INLA H-Block in Long Kesh. In conclusion, Mr. Gallagher said "the IRSP believe that the British Government is in direct contradiction of the Geneva convention (Protocol I) in its treatment of prisoners of war. We call again for the three men to be transferred. Has Britain learned nothing over the past thirty years and its abuse of Irish political prisoners' rights. To prevent a serious protest within the prison they should act immediately." |
