Statement from IRSP spokesperson Fra Halligan:
"Tonight's murders in Poyntzpass is the work of Loyalist paramilitaries. They obviously attempted to slaughter as many people as possible for no other reason than their perceived religious affiliation. The attempted murder of a young man in Toomebridge earlier in the day was similarly motivated. "As reprehensible as these attacks is the conspiracy of silence by the RUC, British and Irish Governments over the massive car bomb placed in Carnlough and the groups behind these actions. "It is common knowledge that both of the mainstream loyalist paramilitary groups, the UVF and UDA were behind these and other such actions. "Tonight in a public meeting in West Belfast, Dr Martin Mansergh (Chief political advisor to the Irish Government) said that republicans should adopt a 'spiritual' approach to these same loyalists. He spoke against republicans who would defend their community. This shows just how far removed from the reality of life of Northern Nationalists that the Irish Government are." |
