IRSP Welcome McAliskey Decision
9 March 1998

IRSP Prisons Spokesperson Willie Gallagher wecomed the British government decision not to extradite Roisin McAliskey, but said the belated move by the British to acknowledge that she had no case to answer had come at great suffering for Rosin and her baby.

Mr. Gallagher said: " No amount of hand wringing by the British government can conceal the fact that Roisin McAlsikey had been held a political hostage by them. She has been a political hostage to a flawed and failed political process.

"Some will say that this decision is another 'concession' to the Nationalist community. The IRSP reject that analysis, the Nationalist working class reject any attempt by the British government to barter human rights for concessions on Irish national rights."

In conclusion, Mr. Gallagher said: "We are calling for issues surrounding equal and human rights for the Nationalist community in the six counties to be dealt with by a Truth Commission with an independent international dimension."
