The Ard Comhairle of the Irish Republican Socialist Party has taken a decision to mount an active 'Vote No' campaign during the proposed referenda in May on the issue of changes to the Irish constitution. The IRSP leadership also agreed to attempt to unite with other opponents of the measure, including Republican Sinn Fein, in a broad based nation-wide campaign around the issue.
The proposed changes would result in the Dublin Government giving up its constitutional claim that Ireland's territory actually includes the entire island of Ireland. The constitutional ammendment has been presented as part of a series of reforms aimed at ending the long war in the six Irish counties occupied by Britain, but obviously serves no purpose other than to provide official sanction by the Dublin Govenment for efforts by Britain to settle the conflict in the occupied portion of Ireland without making any actual concession to Nationalists within the six counties on the issues of ending Ireland's long partition and restoring sovereignty over the entire island to the majority of the island's populace. The image of the Irish government undertaking to surrender its long-standing claim to the entire 32 counties on the island might appear strange to the casual observer, but those well familiar with the history of Ireland throughout the twentith century know well that the government in Dublin owes its character to the forced partition of the Ireland by Britain as much as does the six county statelet directly occupied by the British Army on the island's northeast end. |
