IRSP Statement on Possible Loyalist Violence
8 July 1998

Statement from Belfast Spokesperson Fra Halligan:

The IRSP call on the working class in nationalist areas to be extremely vigilant due to the increase of loyalist activity.

We have witnessed over the last few days a premeditated campaign of organized loyalist aggression. We have also watched as the RUC and British army politely issue warnings to rampaging loyalist mobs that they intend to use plastic bullets.

We would have to ask why there was no such warnings ever issued by the RUC and crown forces in respect to nationalists. One example in recent times of this is that the RUC indiscriminately fired plastic bullets and attacked local residents in the Short Strand area on Monday 6th of July 1998. This shows that the RUC and British army have not changed their policy towards the nationalist working class.

Mr. Halligan said 'how long will it be before Loyalist paramilitaries, who are allegedly on cease-fire, and who have engaged in gun and bomb attacks in recent days turn their attention once again on the nationalist working class communities? The nationalist working class know only to well that the so called forces of law and order will not only stand idly by but as in the past they will also engage in these acts of violence?'
