The IRSP are calling on both the British and Irish governments to halt the rush towards new emergency legislation as a response to the Omagh bombing.
Ard Comhairle representative Paul Little said, "None of the measures being talked about by the two governments are new, all have been in place in the past and have failed miserably. The horror of what happened in Omagh should not be used to implement new security measures that in the long term will prove to be counter productive and an abuse of civil liberties. In the past such legislation has been used against political parties and people such as paper sellers, and raffle organisers have been held under such powers." In conclusion Mr. Little said, "Whilst all share in the horror of Omagh this is not the time for knee jerk reactions. The IRSP believe in totally inclusive dialogue as the way forward, this lack of inclusiveness is a major flaw in the political process, unless the two governments can answer yes to the question 'We have spoken to all participants to the conflict?', new emergency powers are premature to say the least. |
