IRSP calls British Troop Reductions "Cosmetic Exercise"
11 September 1998

The Irish Republican Socialist Party are calling for an independent international commission to monitor British army breaches of the announcement by RUC chief constable Ronnie Flanagan.

IRSP representative Fra Halliigan said:

"The last time measures such as this were announced by the British, it was purely a media exercise that failed to translate into real difference for the people on the ground.

"For many working class Nationalist areas the levels of British troops on the streets actually increased rather than decreased, in North Belfast in particular Ardoyne, New Lodge, and Cliftonville experienced increased British Army oppression.

"The failure of the Good Friday Agreement to put in place any method of monitoring British military operations that breech the spirit of the new political climate is a major flaw in the agreement."

In conclusion, Mr. Halligan said, "It is also unclear if a reduction in British troop levels will be accomplished by an increase in the levels of armed RUC patrols. This is not only a breech of the spirit of the flawed agreement, but also is totally unacceptable to the Nationalist working class community.

"The IRSP are setting up a monitoring project to expose and highlight British hypocrisy and hype. Members of the local communities should contact their local IRSP representative, or 392 Falls Road, or telephone 321024 if they see British troops in their area."
