The Irish Republican Socialist Party have added its backing to the
forthcoming Anti-Water Charges demonstration in Derry and stated that
"a clear policy of non-payment and working class unity is the only way
to beat Water Tax and job cuts through privatisation of public sector
jobs."
A spokesperson for the Derry IRSP said: "The IRSP are in full support of Saturday's rallies and will be participating in the campaign against water charges as we have done so from the outset. It is vital to ensure a clear line of complete opposition to privatisation and non-payment by all our class. We call on others to turn out a voice their opposition as it will be the working class again who will bear the brunt of any introduction of water taxation. "Make no mistake our class, be they Protestant, Catholic or Dissenter, are now on a war footing spurred on by mounting attacks on our communities and on our places of work. It is a war against the destruction of public service jobs and the water service. It is a war in which services to the low paid and on welfare payments will be directly effected. It is a war which some feel has been already lost but they are wrong. The campaign of non-payment and class unity is the only show in town. That is why the British government, just like its defunct six county administration, must feel the wrath of working class anger to any planned introduction of household water charges and the loss of any jobs as a result of it." In conclusion the spokesperson said: "Just like the much hated Poll Tax throughout Scotland, Wales and England, it too was defeated by working class anger and widespread mobilisation at both community and workplace levels. That is why we as republican socialists feel the need to state that a clear policy of non-payment and working class unity is the only way to beat Water Tax and to prevent job cuts through privatisation of public sector jobs. "Our party call on all community groups and trade unions to turn out to Saturday's demonstrations against the water charges and support the public service workers currently taking industrial action against further jobs cuts and privatisation, support the campaign against the water charges."
